Why Your Living Room Feels Unfinished

Cover image for the MARL Studio journal article {{Title}}

When a client tells us a room “doesn’t feel finished” despite a full furniture list, the problem is almost never the furniture. It’s usually one of two things: a single overhead light doing all the work, or artwork and rugs sized for a different room.

Start With Light, Not Lamps

A single ceiling fixture flattens a room at night and makes every other decision in it look wrong. We aim for at least three light sources at different heights — an overhead or pendant, a floor or table lamp at seated eye level, and something low, like an uplight behind a plant or console. Warm colour temperature matters more than brightness.

Then Check the Rug

The single most common sizing mistake we see: rugs too small for the seating around them. As a rule, every piece of furniture in the grouping should have at least its front legs on the rug — floating a rug in the middle of a room with furniture pushed to the walls is what makes a room read as unfinished, even when everything on it is beautiful.
