Thistle & Vale

Thistle & Vale is a full restoration of a category-B listed Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh’s New Town. Heritage constraints shaped every early decision — cornicing, shutters, and fireplaces were restored rather than replaced, and new interventions were designed to be legible as additions rather than pastiche.

Where the brief allowed more freedom — bathrooms, the kitchen, and a garden-level snug — we introduced a calmer, more contemporary material language in dialogue with the historic shell: honed stone, blackened steel, and loose linen upholstery that ages well against two-hundred-year-old plasterwork.
